News and the public sphere

Here's an interesting short blogpost on why increased access to "high quality" news might be decreasing levels of political participation.

I think this blogpost touches on an interesting point. As someone who admittedly does not participate extensively in local politics, it begs the question, why not?

A large part of my desire to participate on a national level is driven by a combination of peer pressure and messages from the media stressing the importance of the next election. Perhaps if the media made a bigger deal about the importance of local elections and activities such as writing to your representative etc. then it would encourage people more?

But the lumbering problems of the international sphere and the national crises are just more interesting to read about and seem more relevant if trying to gain a greater perspective.
